XTZ 創始人及總設計師 ～ Olle Eilason

XTZ是瑞典新晉崛起並且發展最為迅速的音響製造商，它的創始人及總設計師為Olle Eilason先生。Eilason先生擁有20多年的行業經驗，曾經設計過不少出色的產品，也曾擔任過很多著名音響品牌的瑞典代理。他因有感於目前在市場上許多廠商無心關注如何提升產品的品質與韻味，而皆醉心於追求利潤，令音響產品的價格一再水漲船高，甚至脫離了多數人的接受能力這一事實，決定另闢蹊徑，創立XTZ這一品牌，使用最好的設計與元件開發最佳解決方案，從而提供具有最佳性價比的平價產品，讓更多人都可以擁有好的音響。    
   

Olle Eliason先生不僅是一位元音樂愛好者，同時還是一位元音響設計師。

早在Olle十四、五歲的時候就開始迷戀欣賞音樂，動手調整父親的AIWA（愛華）音響，並認識到更好的音質令音樂聽起來更動聽。當時他特別喜歡聽Iron Maiden、AC/DC、Metallica、Judas Priest之類的搖滾樂，這些都是比較重金屬風格的音樂，而他的父親則喜歡老式的音樂，不喜歡他聽的東西，也不喜歡他開太大聲。他曾經因為音樂開太大聲而受到父親斥責，被要求關小音量或者乾脆關掉。不過他還是一如既往的喜歡這些東西，到現在欣賞音樂仍然是其最大的愛好。他很高興當初他所喜歡的那些音樂如今已經變成了大眾音樂的一部分，輕易為人們所接受，不過像死亡金屬那一類的重金屬音樂，他則表現得像自己的父親一樣不能接受。
   

   16歲的時候，Olle開始學習電子學知識，動手修理電氣產品，並開始調節音響。比如往揚聲器裡面填充吸音材料，調節低頻反射孔，調節黑膠唱盤和唱臂，不過那時候還只是出於愛好，並不專業。但隨著時間流逝，經驗也在不斷增長。期間曾經發生過一些事故，比如讓音箱著火，觸電之類的，不過Olle也從這些事故當中得到了一些教訓。


1987年，Olle開始從事音響和電器維修方面的工作，這段時期的工作經驗讓他對電子元器件的特性以及產品電路圖和結構都有了深入瞭解。
   

   1992年Olle開始創辦自己的公司，經營Hi-Fi和TV產品，負責過Philips、Canton、QLN、Yamaha、Pioneer、Harman Kardon這些品牌在瑞典的銷售。這段時期他不僅專注於銷售產品，也接觸和測試了越來越多的產品。作為一名發燒友，他自己也經常更換更新更好的器材以獲得更好的聲音。目前僅其個人收藏就已經有數百種不同的音響產品。
       

在欣賞之餘，針對市售器材上所存在的這樣那樣的缺憾，Olle也開始自己動手來設計前級、後級功率放大器，並製作線材，組裝產品。他曾製作了大量不同類型的音箱，還為數百輛汽車裝配了車載音響。甚至在買車之前就已經先買好了自己的車載音響。因為在他看來，買車是人生當中的重要一步，但是沒有好的車載音響，這樣的車子就是不完整的。
除去自己動手來製作音響器材，早在和父母住在一起的時候，Olle便已經開始拿出自己的音響在家中花園的草坪上進行測試。最早他所使用的器材只是日本力仕的功放簡單搭配瑞典本地的一個音響品牌Rauna音箱，來測試房間對於音響器材表現效果的影響。這種測試也讓他認識到房間是影響Hi-Fi系統的第一大要素。在草地上聽音響基本上消除了房間的影響，可以得到近似於無響室的效果。
       

後來隨著條件的完善，Olle請來了瑞典專業的聲學工程師為其設計專門的試音間，並且在位於瑞典Gothenburg的無響室內進行了大量盲聽測試，來比較音箱、喇叭線、訊號線、CD機等不同的音響器材，看看究竟人們能夠從中聽出多大區別。同時他也參加過在世界各地所舉行的許許多多的各式音響展會，聆聽過從便宜的到非常之昂貴的各種器材。這些都豐富了他的設計和調整經驗。
20多年的從業經驗，讓Olle瞭解到什麼才是音響當中最重要的東西，他也將自己對音響的深刻理解融入到了自己的設計之內。XTZ便是誕生在這種對於音響的深刻理解的基礎之上。

The new version has got updated crossover filters, optimized for the best possible performance in terms of phase linearity and frequency response. Just like its predecessor, the new version is equipped with SEAS Excel High End drivers, providing an absolutely clean and transparent sound. 60 years of experience supports this driver.

99.26 also features a ribbon tweeter to ensure a superior transient response and very flat frequency response.

Technical presentationThe 99.26 MKII Piano is the new monitor speaker in the XTZ 99-series, and can be used as front speaker on a stand or satellite. It can also be used together with the subwoofer modules 99 W 12.16S or 99 W 12.18P to create a very competent 2.2 front system.
XTZ 99.26 MKII Piano is the same speaker as 99.25 MKII Piano except for the cabinet shape.

Cabinet
The cabinet is built using a narrow front - not only an aestetically neat shape, but also an advantage from an acoustic point of view as it provides a stable construction to keep resonances to a minimum. The cabinet is built from 25 mm MDF to ensure good sonic properties.

TweeterWe selected a ribbon tweeter with superior transient response and a very flat frequency response. Ribbon tweeters are frequently used in high end speakers.

The ribbon cone is super light and only 18 microns thin. It is a rosin-aluminium-rosin sandwich construction that has been hardened at 320 degrees celsius.

The magnet system is a two row highly efficient neodynium construction in a moulded chassis of ceramical carbon steel.

Fishbone shaped contactors in aluminium provide a low connection resistance and good heat dissipation.

The driver has a high power capacity and handles frequencies up to 40000 Hz which makes it DVD-Audio and SACD-ready.

Woofer/Midrange driver
After evaluating a large number of drivers from different manufacturers we selected one from Seas, a company that has a solid reputation in the area of high quality speaker drivers. You can find Seas drivers in many High End speakers, even with 6 figure price tags. With 60 years of experience, they have cutting edge knowledge that puts most of the competition behind.
For the woofer/midrange we decided on a 6,5" magnesium driver from the Seas Excel series that have extreme performance. We claim that finding a better 6,5" driver on the market is a very difficult task.

The surface treated magnesium cone is extremely light but still extremely stiff and effectively reduces resonances.

The rubber surrounding makes sure that no edge resonances are present.

The moulded metal basket is a "high flow" type that is acoustically transparent and has high precision since the basket is shaped exactly due to the moulding process. This makes sure that the basket is very stable and efficiently reduces resonances. The basket is absolutely non-magnetic, which contributes to a higher efficiency of the driver.

A strong magnet combined with the light cone ensures high efficiency and a good transient response.

Heavy copper rings mounted above and below the T-shaped pole piece reduce non linear and modulation distortion and increase the overload margin.

The copper plating of the top and bottom plates along with a solid copper phase plug improves the heat conduction and thus contributes to the high power durability.

Goldplated terminals reduce contact resistance and serve as anti-corrosion.

Large windows in the basket both above and below the spider reduces sound reflections, air flow noise and cavity resonances.

Crossover
The crossover is an advanced Linkwitz/Riley type, with 12/18 dB/oct slope for the midrange and tweeter. This offers a minimum of phase shiftings and good transient response. The filter uses MOX resistors, air wound coils and high quality capacitors.
There are tuning options included to enable you to adjust the tweeter level to match your listening room and preferences.

Binding post
The bi-wiring connectors are goldplated and you can connect to the amplifier with double cables (bi-wiring), or connect to two amplifiers (bi-amping) for further improving the sound. This would need active filters.


Room Tuning - Mechanical boundare frequency control
By using the supplied bass reflex plugs, it is possible to mechanically alter the lower boundary frequency on XTZ 99.26 MKII.

This makes it possible to drastically alter the sound character of the speaker. You can choose from eight different sound shapes in the bass range by using the bass plugs.

99 W10.17P is a very flexible passive subwoofer in an elegant piano finish. You can now have more control of your sound as you are free to select any amplifier for the subwoofer (suitable power is 100 - 400 watts).
A good example of a competent external amplifier is the Sub Amp 1/Sub Amp 1 DSP. An advantage using an external amplifier is that you can connect two subwoofers, thus reducing the problems with nodes/modes in the room.

Technical presentation
The cabinet is built from 25 mm MDF with several internal bars for a robust and rigid construction without resonances. The idea is that the 99W10.17P can be used together with for example 99.26, but of course it can be used with other speakers as well (as a separate bass module). Together, these form a potent 2.2 system.
After evaluating several drivers, the choice fell on the SEAS units. Norwegian SEAS is today a world leading speaker/driver manufacturer. Their drivers can be found in several upper High End speakers. With their 60 years of experience, they possess knowledge that usually puts the competition behind.

The driver has a high flow type solid aluminum cast basket, acoustically transparent. The membrane is extremely rigid, and in combination with the soft rubber suspension the usual edge resonances are effectively eliminated. The magnet is a 3 kg unit. This together with the very powerful magnet, low weight membrane and stable suspension provides both power and precision to the sound.
99W12.17P has got rubber feet to reduce vibrations. These can be replaced with spikes if preferred (M6). The rubber feet are adjustable.

Why use two subwoofers?
We recommend using two subwoofers as there are several advantages this way. First, the system can play louder, and another reason is that more excitation points will cause fewer phase cancellations in the room. The result is a clearer soundstage. 99 W12.16 is a standing version of the model 99 W12.16, one of our most popular products. It has been received very well by press and consumers. Why? The answer is because it is a extremely successful compromise between power, pondus and a design that appeal to most people. Further, the careful balance between deep bass response and rapid mid bass makes it suitable for both home cinema and music setups. It also offers a wide range of adjustments for tuning it to most rooms. 99 W12.16 is a further development of the previous model 99 W12

Goals 99 W12.16S is a compact yet powerful subwoofer suitable for both HiFi and cinema setups, with power for those who want to feel the ground shaking and finesse for the epicure.

Quality

• Just like any other speaker we have used reality as our starting point trying to preserve a sound as natural as possible

Cabinet Design We have chosen 25 mm MDF offering a low level of internal resonance, and a cabinet construction reinforced using internal bars for maximum stability. The relatively small cabinet also adds to the stability.

Bass Driver We selected a 12" long stroke driver weighing 6,5 kg, with good transient response and capacity for loud SPL levels. The driver is constructed with a solid aluminum cast basket, a high flow tyoe that´s acoustically transparent. The membrane is a NPP type offering superior robustness and low weight. The magnet is a 100 oz unit.

The combination of a powerful magnet, low weight driver membrane and high performance suspension ensures both power and presicion.

The Amplifier The 99 W12.16S uses a 300 watt (RMS) amp to ensure good sound pressure capabilities and still maintain the precision. The amp is well equipped with a toroidal transformer and balanced input. A large heat sink makes sure the heat is dissipated safely. This amplifier offers tuning possibilities that passive filters cannot, phase, adjustable crossover frequency and level. There are two EQ-switches and a selectable highpass filter. The use of an active subwoofer also means the main amplifier just have to drive midrange and tweeters, which effectively reduces the load, often resulting in less distorsion.

Sound Characters And Settings By using the adjustments and included bass reflex port bungs, you can alter the sound character in many ways. This provides you with options to achieve exactly the kind of sound you want.

Level Adjustment The listening volume can be adjusted in respect to the rest of the speakers thanks to the active amplifier.

Crossover Frequency The upper crossover frequency can be adjusted between 40 - 250 Hz. Thanks to this you can alter the bass character from deep to "light" for a optimal integration with the rest of your speakers and the room properties.

EQ-Switch EQ 1 Raises the level around 50Hz with 7dB.
EQ 2 Raises the level around 25Hz with 7dB.

Highpass Filter The high pas filter cuts the lowest parts of the bass region. This can be useful in some cases when the room amplifies the lowest frequencies a lot, resulting in boomy bass and poor precision.


Phase adjustmentThe phase can be adjusted without steps from 0 - 180 degrees.

Room Tuning - Mechanical boundary frequency adjustmentUsing the included foam bungs you can alter the bass character of the subwoofer by plugging the reflex ports.
The picture below shows three different bass characters. By adjusting phase, crossover frequency and level the character can be further adjusted.

XTZ 99.36 MKII is a floor speaker in the 99-series, equipped with SEAS Excel High End drivers, providing an absolutely clean and transparent sound. 60 years of experience supports this driver.

99.36 MKII also features a ribbon tweeter to ensure a superior transient response and very flat frequency response. The new MKII crossover filter offers even flatter frequency response, improved phase linearity and impuls response.

For the 99.36,  we carefully selected the components. The goal was to offer a speaker without compromising, and with a finish normally not found in this price range.

Goals

When the XTZ 99.36 MKII was constructed the resulting quality of the loudspeaker had a greater importance than the cost. Still we claim that with the right skills and production volume, it is possible to obtain true High End quality without ending up with a price so high that only a few people can afford it.

Technical presentation

The 99.36 MKII is a three way construction with internal crossover filter.

The cabinet is built using a narrow front - not only an aestetically neat shape, but also an advantage from an acoustic point of view as it provides a stable construction to keep resonances to a minimum.

The midrange and woofers use separate chambers. This way, we have been able to optimize the chamber volumes for the midrange and bass drivers. Also, the midrange driver can operate without any interference from the woofer.

The new design with its elliptical cabinet shape offer a natural stability. It´s further reinforced with internal bars to effectively suppress resonances and provide a robust construction.

Tweeter

We selected a ribbon tweeter with superior transient response and a very flat frequency response. Ribbon tweeters are frequently used in high end speakers.

The ribbon cone is super light and only 18 microns thin. It is a rosin-aluminium-rosin sandwich construction that has been hardened at 320 degrees celsius.

The magnet system is a two row highly efficient neodynium construction in a moulded chassis of ceramical carbon steel.

Fishbone shaped contactors in aluminium provide a low connection resistance and good heat dissipation.

The driver has a high power capacity and handles frequencies up to 40000 Hz which makes it DVD-Audio and SACD-ready.

Woofer/Midrange driver

After evaluating a large number of drivers from different manufacturers we selected one from Seas, a company that has a solid reputation in the area of high quality speaker drivers. You can find Seas drivers in many High End speakers, even with 6 figure price tags. With 60 years of experience, they have cutting edge knowledge that puts most of the competition behind.

For the woofer/midrange we decided on a 6,5" magnesium driver from the Seas Excel series that have extreme performance. We claim that finding a better 6,5" driver on the market is a very difficult task.

The surface treated magnesium cone is extremely light but still extremely stiff and effectively reduces resonances.

The rubber surrounding makes sure that no edge resonances are present.

The moulded metal basket is a "high flow" type that is acoustically transparent and has high precision since the basket is shaped exactly due to the moulding process. This makes sure that the basket is very stable and efficiently reduces resonances. The basket is absolutely non-magnetic, which contributes to a higher efficiency of the driver.

A strong magnet combined with the light cone ensures high efficiency and a good transient response.

Heavy copper rings mounted above and below the T-shaped pole piece reduce non linear and modulation distortion and increase the overload margin.

The copper plating of the top and bottom plates along with a solid copper phase plug improves the heat conduction and thus contributes to the high power durability.

Goldplated terminals reduce contact resistance and serve as anti-corrosion.

Large windows in the basket both above and below the spider reduces sound reflections, air flow noise and cavity resonances.

Woofer driver
The bass driver is also a Seas unit, but a classic coated paper type, well known for its performance at a very good price/performance ratio. The coated paper membrane is very light, yet rigid with a minimum of resonances and a controlled roll off.

The rubber suspension ensures that edge resonances are suppressed. The cast basket is a high flow type with very good precision. The construction is very stable and completely non magnetic to obtain high effiency. A powerful magnet paired with the light cone provides good transient response.

Crossover

The crossover is a 2 1/2 way Linkwitz/Riley type, with 12 dB/oct slope for the midrange and tweeter. This offers a minimum of phase shiftings and good transient response. For the woofer, we opted for a 24 dB/oct section. The filter uses MOX resistors, air wound coils and high quality capacitors.

There are tuning options included to enable you to adjust the tweeter/bass level to match your listening room and preferences.

Binding post

The tri-wiring connectors are goldplated and you can connect to the amplifier with double cables (bi-wiring), or connect to two amplifiers (bi-amping) for further improving the sound. This would need active filters.

Room Tuning - Mechanical boundare frequency control
By using the supplied bass reflex plugs, it is possible to mechanically alter the lower boundary frequency on XTZ 99.36 MKII.

This makes it possible to drastically alter the sound character of the speaker. You can choose from eight different sound shapes in the bass range by using the bass plugs.

Sealed or bass reflex
With the plugs inserted the speaker operates as a sealed construction.
