XTZ 99.36 MKII is a floor speaker in the 99-series, equipped with SEAS Excel High End drivers, providing an absolutely clean and transparent sound. 60 years of experience supports this driver.

99.36 MKII also features a ribbon tweeter to ensure a superior transient response and very flat frequency response. The new MKII crossover filter offers even flatter frequency response, improved phase linearity and impuls response.

For the 99.36,  we carefully selected the components. The goal was to offer a speaker without compromising, and with a finish normally not found in this price range.

Goals

When the XTZ 99.36 MKII was constructed the resulting quality of the loudspeaker had a greater importance than the cost. Still we claim that with the right skills and production volume, it is possible to obtain true High End quality without ending up with a price so high that only a few people can afford it.

Technical presentation

The 99.36 MKII is a three way construction with internal crossover filter.

The cabinet is built using a narrow front - not only an aestetically neat shape, but also an advantage from an acoustic point of view as it provides a stable construction to keep resonances to a minimum.

The midrange and woofers use separate chambers. This way, we have been able to optimize the chamber volumes for the midrange and bass drivers. Also, the midrange driver can operate without any interference from the woofer.

The new design with its elliptical cabinet shape offer a natural stability. It´s further reinforced with internal bars to effectively suppress resonances and provide a robust construction.

Tweeter

We selected a ribbon tweeter with superior transient response and a very flat frequency response. Ribbon tweeters are frequently used in high end speakers.

The ribbon cone is super light and only 18 microns thin. It is a rosin-aluminium-rosin sandwich construction that has been hardened at 320 degrees celsius.

The magnet system is a two row highly efficient neodynium construction in a moulded chassis of ceramical carbon steel.

Fishbone shaped contactors in aluminium provide a low connection resistance and good heat dissipation.

The driver has a high power capacity and handles frequencies up to 40000 Hz which makes it DVD-Audio and SACD-ready.

Woofer/Midrange driver

After evaluating a large number of drivers from different manufacturers we selected one from Seas, a company that has a solid reputation in the area of high quality speaker drivers. You can find Seas drivers in many High End speakers, even with 6 figure price tags. With 60 years of experience, they have cutting edge knowledge that puts most of the competition behind.

For the woofer/midrange we decided on a 6,5" magnesium driver from the Seas Excel series that have extreme performance. We claim that finding a better 6,5" driver on the market is a very difficult task.

The surface treated magnesium cone is extremely light but still extremely stiff and effectively reduces resonances.

The rubber surrounding makes sure that no edge resonances are present.

The moulded metal basket is a "high flow" type that is acoustically transparent and has high precision since the basket is shaped exactly due to the moulding process. This makes sure that the basket is very stable and efficiently reduces resonances. The basket is absolutely non-magnetic, which contributes to a higher efficiency of the driver.

A strong magnet combined with the light cone ensures high efficiency and a good transient response.

Heavy copper rings mounted above and below the T-shaped pole piece reduce non linear and modulation distortion and increase the overload margin.

The copper plating of the top and bottom plates along with a solid copper phase plug improves the heat conduction and thus contributes to the high power durability.

Goldplated terminals reduce contact resistance and serve as anti-corrosion.

Large windows in the basket both above and below the spider reduces sound reflections, air flow noise and cavity resonances.

Woofer driver
The bass driver is also a Seas unit, but a classic coated paper type, well known for its performance at a very good price/performance ratio. The coated paper membrane is very light, yet rigid with a minimum of resonances and a controlled roll off.

The rubber suspension ensures that edge resonances are suppressed. The cast basket is a high flow type with very good precision. The construction is very stable and completely non magnetic to obtain high effiency. A powerful magnet paired with the light cone provides good transient response.

Crossover

The crossover is a 2 1/2 way Linkwitz/Riley type, with 12 dB/oct slope for the midrange and tweeter. This offers a minimum of phase shiftings and good transient response. For the woofer, we opted for a 24 dB/oct section. The filter uses MOX resistors, air wound coils and high quality capacitors.

There are tuning options included to enable you to adjust the tweeter/bass level to match your listening room and preferences.

Binding post

The tri-wiring connectors are goldplated and you can connect to the amplifier with double cables (bi-wiring), or connect to two amplifiers (bi-amping) for further improving the sound. This would need active filters.

Room Tuning - Mechanical boundare frequency control
By using the supplied bass reflex plugs, it is possible to mechanically alter the lower boundary frequency on XTZ 99.36 MKII.

This makes it possible to drastically alter the sound character of the speaker. You can choose from eight different sound shapes in the bass range by using the bass plugs.

Sealed or bass reflex
With the plugs inserted the speaker operates as a sealed construction.

Drivers : The high qualitey polypropylene cone with electro plated titanum paint is extremely light, yet offering stiffness to effectively reduce resonances. The rubber suspension makes sure any edge resonances are suppressed. The cast aluminum basket is acoustically transparent with a high precision from the exact moulding process. This ensures high efficiency. The basket is also absolutely non magnetic to further enhance the efficiency. A strong magnet together with the light cone provides good transient respons. High efficiency and the long stroke construction allows for a high sound pressure level.

Tweeter : We selected a ribbon tweeter with supreme transient respons and very flat frequency respons. Ribbon tweeters are frequently used in high end speakers The ribbon is placed in a die cast aluminum horn to maximize its efficiency. The ribbon is super light, only 18 microns thick. it´s a rosin-aluminum-rosin sandwich construction that´s been hardened in 320C temperature. The magnet system is built from two rows of highly effective neodynium magnets in a cast carbon steel construction. Fish bone shape connectors made from aluminum ensures a low contact resistance and good heat dissipation. The tweeter can take high levels of power, and handles frequencies up to 40 kHz which makes it ideal for DVD Audio and SACD.

Technical presentationThe XTZ 93 series is equipped with a highly specified 6½" woofer with a fixed phase plug and a cast basket in aluminium.
This driver produce a transparent reproduction and can handle high sound pressures. Further, we added a silk soft dome giving the listener a transparent and highly detailed treble reproducion.

XTZ 93.23 can be used a frontspeaker (on a speaker stand) or as a surround speaker. The box is built from 25mm MDF, which has good sound technical properties. The outside is painted in high gloss black.

XTZ 93.23 is designed to fit on top of the 99 W12S  active subwoofer - This creates an extreme 2.2 modular system with power and a unique flexibility when it comes to configuration of the speakers.

XTZ 93.23 has got robust, gold plated terminals that accept banana plug, fork and bare cable. It´s also possible to bi-wire for those who wants to.


Room-Tuning
Normal rooms are far from perfect from a sonic point of view. Standing waves and room nodes are common problem. This leads to uneven sound balance, which in turn results in the bass reproduction being very different from room to room.
This can be slightly changed with the soft plug. The bass character can be altered to match the room and personal taste


Bass reflex or closed box
You can choose whether you prefer bassreflex or closed box. If the plug is inserted the speaker acts as a sealed construction. This also enables it to be mounted near a wall.

Cabinet designThe cabinet is built from 21 mm MDF to obtain good sonic properties. The front use two layers for a total of 30 mm MDF. The cabinet is further reinforced with internal bars for a rigid construction.

TweeterWe have chosen a high resolution soft dome tweeter capable of high reproduction quality, completely ready for SACD and DVD Audio recordings.
